(كم) عنصر لا فلزِّي أساسيّ في تكوين الفحم بجميع أنواعه، يوجد على صور مختلفة بعضها متبلور كالفحم، وبعضها غير متبلور كالماس، ويدخل في تركيب جميع الكائنات الحيّة

أوَّل أكسيد الكربون
(كم) غاز عديم اللون والرائحة سامّ لدرجة كبيرة، يتشكّل من عدم الاحتراق الكليّ للكربون أو للموادّ الكربونيّة، كالبنزين.

ثاني أكسيد الكربون
(كم) غاز عديم اللون والرائحة يتشكَّل نتيجة التنفس والاحتراق والتحلّل العضويّ، ويدخل في صناعة المشروبات الغازيّة، كما يستخدم لإخماد الحرائق.
