ج مِكْروبات : (طب) كائن حيّ لا يُرى بالعين المجرّدة، بل بواسطة المجهر. وحيد الخليّة يعيش في الماء والدّم والهواء، ينقل الأمراضَ المُعدية من المرضى إلى الأصحّاء، يختلف في شكله أو غذائه أو حاجته للأكسجين، بعضه يعيش بشكل مستقلّ وقد يكون رمِّيًّا أي : يتغذّى على الموادّ العضويّة الميِّتة العَفِنة، وبعض تلك الأنواع مُسبِّب للجراثيم.

pl. mikrūbāt: (Medicine) Microbe; a unicellular living organism invisible to the naked eye, visible only through a microscope. It lives in water, blood, and air, transmitting infectious diseases from the sick to the healthy. It varies in shape, nutrition, or oxygen requirements; some live independently, and some may be saprophytic, feeding on dead, decaying organic matter, while some types are pathogenic (germ-causing).
