ج أغرُب وأغرِبة وغِربان، جج غرابينُ : (حن) جنس طير من فصيلة الغرابيّات ورتبة الجواثم، له أنواع كثيرة أشهرها الغراب الأسود، له جناحان عريضان ومنقار طويل وقويّ، يتغذّى على الحشرات والديدان والجِيَف والبذور، والعرب يتشاءمون به إذا نعَق قبل الرّحيل، ويضرب به المثل في السّواد والبكور والحذر والبعد
🇬🇧 Translation:
Plural: aghrub, aghribah, ghirban; Plural of plural: gharabin; (Zoology) A genus of birds from the Corvidae family and order Passeriformes, with many species, the most famous being the black crow. It has broad wings and a long, strong beak, feeding on insects, worms, carcasses, and seeds. Arabs used to view it as an ill omen if it cawed before setting out on a journey, and it is proverbial for blackness, early rising, wariness, and distance.

  • Proverbial for delay and negligence
  • Land where no crow flies: fertile
  • The 'crows of the Arabs': their black people, likened to crows in color, among them Antarah in the pre-Islamic era
