(Linguistics) Emphatic or velarized/uvularized speech sounds articulated by raising the back of the tongue toward the palate (soft palate), namely: Ṣād, Ḍād, Ṭāʾ, and Ẓāʾ, as well as Qāf, Ghayn, Khāʾ, and Rāʾ (when not kasra or sukūn), and Lām (in the majestic name of God 'Allah' unless preceded by a kasra). They are also called: velarized or emphatic sounds (Al-Aswāt al-Mutbaqah).
