ضرَبَ عددًا في آخر
(جب) كرَّره بعدد مرات العدد الآخر
🇬🇧 Translation:
(Algebra) Repeated it by the number of times of the other number (To multiply).
  • ضرَب أخماسًا في أسداس [مثل] : يُضرَب للحائر القَلِق كما يُضَرب للماكر المحتال
  • ضرَب الرَّقمَ القياسيّ : حقّقه وتعدَّاه إلى رقم جديد لم يحقِّقه غيره، أو تفوَّق على غيره في عمل ما.

  • Speculated blindly [Proverb]: Said of the confused and anxious person as well as the cunning and deceitful
  • Broke the record: achieved it and surpassed it to a new number not achieved by anyone else, or excelled others in an action.
ضرَبَ الضَّريبةَ عليهم
أوجبها عليهم وألزمهم بها

Made it obligatory for them and bound them to it (To impose (a tax/penalty)).

ضرَب عليهم الحصارَ
  • حاطهم وضيَّق عليهم? ضرَب الشَّبكةَ على الطَّائر : ألقاها عليه
  • ضرَب القاضي على يد فلان : حجر عليه ومنعه من التصرُّف، عاقبه.

  • Encompassed and restricted them ? Cast the net over the bird: threw it upon it
  • The judge restrained so-and-so: interdicted him and prevented him from acting, punished him.
ضرَبَ اللَّونُ إلى لون آخر
مال إليه
🇬🇧 Translation:
Inclined to it (To verge on/tend towards (a color)).
  • ضرَب اللَّيلُ بأرواقه/ ضرَب اللَّيلُ بظلامه : أقبل وخيَّم
  • ضرَب على غِراره : تبعه، عمل عملَه
  • ضرَب عليهم اللَّيلُ : طال وامتدَّ
  • ضرَب عليهم اليأسُ : شملهم.

شطبها ومحاها.

ضرَبَ على أُذُنِه
أنامه، بعث عليه النَّوم ومنعه من السّمع

Made him sleep, brought sleep upon him and prevented him from hearing (To cause to sleep).
ضرَبَ عن الأمر
أضرب، توقَّف وانقطع
🇬🇧 Translation:
Went on strike, stopped and ceased (To desist/turn away from).
ضَرَبَ في الأرض
سافر، سعى فيها ابتغاء الرِّزق أو الغزو
🇬🇧 Translation:
Traveled, strove in it seeking livelihood or raiding (To travel/journey).

  • ضرَبتِ الطيرُ : ذهبت تبتغي الرِّزقَ
