(Anatomy) a hollow muscular organ that receives blood from the veins and pumps it into the arteries, with its base at the top suspended by ligaments in the left side of the thoracic cavity. It has two main chambers: the left containing oxygenated (red) blood and the right containing deoxygenated (blue) blood needing purification. Each main chamber has two sub-chambers separated by a valve; the upper chamber is called the atrium and the lower is the ventricle. The heart is sometimes used metaphorically for the intellect as it is the center of perception, emotions, guidance, piety, purity, and serenity, as well as sin, distraction, deviation, rage, regret, etc.
